چکیده

Consider a collection of n rigid, massive bodies interacting according to their mutual gravitational attraction. A relative equilibrium motion is one where the entire configuration rotates rigidly and uniformly about a fixed axis in R. Such a motion is possible only for special positions and orientations of the bodies. A minimal energy motion is one which has the minimum possible energy in its fixed angular momentum level. While every minimal energy motion is a relative equilibrium motion, the main result here is that a relative equilibrium motion of n ≥ 3 disjoint rigid bodies is never an energy minimizer. This generalizes a known result about point masses to the case of rigid bodies.

Amino acids interacting with defected carbon nanotubes: ab initio calculations

The adsorption of a number of amino acids on a defected single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) isinvestigated by using the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption energies andequilibrium distances are calculated for various configurations such as amino acid attaching to defectsites heptagon, pentagon and hexagon in defective tube and also for several molecular orientationswi...

A new tool to investigate the interactions between elastic fibers and rigid bodies

This paper presents a new tool which makes it possible to find the spatial configuration of a system featuring elastic fibres interacting with each other and/or with rigid bodies. The configuration is determined by means of the principle of the minimum elastic potential energy of the system, ignoring Coulomb friction at the contacts. In particular, the paper reports both the elastic fiber model...

Event-driven dynamics of rigid bodies interacting via discretized potentials.

A framework for performing event-driven, adaptive time step simulations of systems of rigid bodies interacting under stepped or terraced potentials in which the potential energy is only allowed to have discrete values is outlined. The scheme is based on a discretization of an underlying continuous potential that effectively determines the times at which interaction energies change. As in most e...

A randomized global optimization method for protein-protein docking

In this paper we report results on the problem of docking two large proteins by means of a two-phase monotonic basin hopping method. Given an appropriate force field which is used to measure the interaction energy between two biomolecules which are considered as rigid bodies, we used a randomized global optimization methods based upon the repeated use of local searches. These local searches inc...

Generating optimized marker-based rigid bodies for optical tracking systems

Marker-based optical tracking systems are often used to track objects that are equipped with a certain number of passive or active point markers. Fixed configurations of these markers, so-called rigid bodies, can be detected by, for example, infrared stereo-based camera systems, and their position and orientation can be reconstructed by corresponding tracking algorithms. The main issue in desig...
